Join the Flight CrewSTEM learning doesn’t just happen in the classroom—it thrives in afterschool programs, community spaces, and real-world experiences. That’s why the Flight Crew, a national youth ambassador program led by the STEM Next Opportunity Fund, is such an exciting opportunity for young Missourians. This initiative elevates youth from every state, giving them a platform to share their STEM stories, inspire their peers, and show that STEM is for everyone.

The Missouri AfterSchool Network is proud to support and encourage Missouri youth to apply for this remarkable program. Open to students aged 13-18, the Flight Crew offers an opportunity for young leaders to represent their state, advocate for STEM opportunities, and demonstrate the power of learning beyond the classroom. As a Flight Crew member, students will have the chance to participate in mentorship opportunities, share their stories on regional, state, and national stages, and engage with leaders in STEM fields.

Since its inception, the Flight Crew has gained recognition from state leaders, the White House, NASA, The National STEM Festival, SXSW EDU, and more. These young ambassadors are making a difference, proving that when youth are given a voice, they can inspire change in STEM education and workforce development.

Aaron Banks, youth workforce initiatives coordinator for the Missouri AfterSchool Network, emphasizes the importance of the program:
“The Flight Crew is an essential part of our STEM efforts in Missouri. By amplifying youth voices, this program not only empowers students to share their STEM journeys but also reinforces that they belong in these spaces. When young people see their peers leading, speaking, and advocating for STEM, it sends a powerful message—STEM is for everyone, and their contributions matter. The Flight Crew helps create a pipeline of future innovators by ensuring that students from all backgrounds feel seen, heard, and inspired to pursue STEM opportunities beyond the classroom.”

By supporting and encouraging Missouri youth to apply for the Flight Crew, we can help shape the next generation of STEM leaders. These ambassadors not only gain valuable experience and connections but also play a crucial role in breaking down barriers and expanding access to STEM for all.

Missouri students who are passionate about STEM and want to make a difference should consider applying to be part of the next Flight Crew cohort. The future of STEM is bright, and with the voices of young leaders guiding the way, we can ensure that every student sees a place for themselves in the STEM workforce.
