YDC Advisors

YDC candidates work with trained advisors who serve as their guide and mentor as they prepare a professional resource portfolio and other required items.

The advisor will be responsible for explaining the YDC process, observing the candidate in their work environment, and completing the YDC Observation Instrument.  The advisor will also assist the candidate in completing the application for assessment form and ensure that all required items have been completed prior to submitting documentation and requesting a time for the Youth Development Studies Review and oral interview.  When the candidate is applying for distance assessment, the advisor will also complete the Professional Resource File Distance Assessment Checklist.

What are the qualifications to be an YDC Advisor?

  • Ability to work with individuals representative of diverse groups which may be different than the advisor’s racial, ethnic, social and/or economic background.
  • Knowledgeable about best practices and quality standards.
  • Knowledgeable about local zoning and state licensing requirements.
  • Educational background and experience:
    • B.A., B.S. or advanced degree in elementary education, recreation, social work, youth development from an accredited college or university, OR
    • A.A. or A.A.S. in school-age care, recreation, child/youth development, or education. Plus, 1-year experience working in a youth development program.
  • Maintain objectivity and credibility by avoiding conflicts of interest:
    • Must not be the director of the program at which the candidate is working.
    • Must not be working as a co-teacher/facilitator with the candidate.
    • Must not be the relative of a child in the candidate’s care.
    • Is not related to the candidate by blood or marriage or other legal relationship.

How do I become a YDC Adviser?

  1. Purchase the YDC Packet by e-mailing moasn@missouri.edu and review the information as you complete the training in steps 2 and 3.
  2. Review the YDC Advisor Training PowerPoint.
  3. Review the Advisor Training for Distance Assessment PowerPoint if you will be working with candidates using the Distance Assessment Process.
  4. Submit a brief autobiography (approximately 300 words) that includes answers to the following:
    1. Who are you? Include educational background and other advisor qualification information?
    2. What influenced your decision to work with youth?
    3. How are you an advocate for youth, families and co-workers?
    4. What qualifies you to be an advisor?
  5. Submit two letters of recommendation from individuals who can speak to your character, qualifications, and experience in the youth development field.
  6. Submit the Advisor Registry Consent Form giving permission to MASN to post and/or distribute your contact information to YDC candidates.

Where do I submit my documentation?

After completing the online training, please submit to MASN your:

  • Autobiography
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Completed Advisor Registry Consent form
